The two parts are joined by a breezeway originally intended as a firebreak. Original elements of the front addition include the first-floor shutters, all doors, staircases, window sashes and frames, mouldings, nearly all floors, fireplaces and mantels. Its woodwork is joined with wooden dowels rather than nails. The house is regarded as an excellent example of federal architecture. During the 1777 Battle of Germantown it was occupied by British troops and served as a fort against the American attack under George Washington. In the later nineteenth century, the noted Philadelphia architect Walter Cope lived there. The property is also located within a National Historic Landmark district along the avenue.","period_of_significance":"1793","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Good condition; altered with later kitchen wing and rear wood shed additions.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.663456-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/71000719.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000719/1bf140426a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000719/1bf140426a-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Billmeyer.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Billmeyer.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"66000678","name":"Colonial Germantown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/colonial-germantown-historic-district-66000678/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71997342","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Billmeyer_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5216567"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/philadelphia/billmeyer-daniel-house-71000719/"}
