It is now owned by the Lehigh County Historical Society and open to visitors.","why_significant":"The house was the home of George Taylor, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence for Pennsylvania, ironmaster and politician, from 1768 to 1776. The nomination describes it as little altered, with largely original 18th-century interior panelling, mantles, floors and hardware.","narrative":"Built in 1768 by Philadelphia carpenters on the east bank of the Lehigh River in what is now Catasauqua, this two-story Georgian house of stone rubble has walls 24 inches thick under a white slaked-lime stucco. Its interior retains 18th-century panelling, mantels, wide pine floors and iron hardware, while the dining room fireplace dates from the early 19th-century Greek Revival period. George Taylor, an ironmaster and Pennsylvania politician, lived here from 1768 until 1776, when he sold it. He signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 as one of Pennsylvania's delegates to the Continental Congress, and he had earlier supplied cannon and shot to the Revolutionary armies from the Durham Furnace. The house was acquired by the Lehigh County Historical Society in 1945 and restored in 1966-1968. It is regarded as a rare surviving example of a pre-Revolutionary house tied to a Declaration signer, and it is now open to visitors as a historic house exhibit.","period_of_significance":"1768-1776","architect_builder":"Philadelphia carpenters (unnamed)","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Carefully restored in 1966-1968 and in excellent condition; open to visitors","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.669929-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/71000709_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000709/e4d72c7bd6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000709/e4d72c7bd6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Allreet","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Taylor_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Allreet</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Taylor_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71994161","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Taylor_House_(Catasauqua,_Pennsylvania)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5545106"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lehigh-county/taylor-george-house-71000709/"}
