The form describes it as a substantial brick house with Flemish bond walls.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is in a remarkable state of preservation and is an excellent example of Flemish bond brickwork in southeastern Pennsylvania. A great deal of its interior woodwork is original. Its tavern use and its location on the route of Knyphausen's march before the Battle of Brandywine add historical associations.","narrative":"Built in the first quarter of the eighteenth century, the Barns-Brinton House is a brick dwelling in Hamorton, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Its walls are laid in Flemish bond with black headers, and lighter brick forms a double diamond pattern on the west gable. Surveys date its construction to before 1725, and an oval date stone reading 1776 is considered incorrect, likely a recut of an eroded 1726. Isaac Taylor surveyed the original 554-acre grant for Peter Dicks in 1702. William Barns, a blacksmith, acquired 104 acres and operated a tavern from 1722 until his death in 1731, with a brief license denial in 1728. The Brinton family held the farm until 1859. The house is significant for its well-preserved brickwork, much original interior woodwork, and tavern history. It also lay on the line of march of General Knyphausen toward the Battle of Brandywine in September 1777. The Chadds Ford Historical Society acquired the house and about an acre and a half in 1969.","period_of_significance":"cu 1726","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Altered exterior with replaced window frames and cornice and removed pent roof; Chadds Ford Historical Society purchased the house in 1969 and took steps to halt deterioration.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:30.64428-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/71000692.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000692/958739a1ab-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000692/958739a1ab-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Choess","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Barns-Brinton_House_rear.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Choess</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Barns-Brinton_House_rear.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"66000660","name":"Brandywine Battlefield","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/brandywine-battlefield-66000660/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71995740","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barns-Brinton_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4861871"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/chester-county/barns-brinton-house-71000692/"}
