It is thought to be the Scott dwelling from the late 1600s.","why_significant":"The form calls it one of the most important architectural landmarks in North Carolina and one of the state's oldest buildings. It is notable for its forty-five degree gables and fine brick work. It also served as a meeting place for early political figures, including the Perquimans Precinct Court.","narrative":"Southeast of Hertford in Perquimans County, this one-and-a-half-story brick house is among the earliest surviving buildings in North Carolina. It has a steep gable roof with a forty-five degree pitch, interior end chimneys, and brickwork laid in English bond at the water table and Flemish bond with glazed headers above. The house originally faced the Perquimans River to the north, but a later access road shifted its orientation to the land side. Inside, it appears to have begun as a hall-and-parlor plan before a partition created a center hall. The site traces to Joseph Scott, a Quaker granted 640 acres in 1684, and the Scott dwelling is thought to be this house. Its location near river crossings made it a public meeting place, and the Perquimans Precinct Court met there in 1689-1691 and again in 1703-1704. The Sanders and White families later held it. The nomination values it for its age, brickwork and political history.","period_of_significance":"17th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked deteriorated and altered, with the original site retained; preservation work is shown in progress and the property is marked unoccupied.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.513711-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/7217/47721750/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/71000615.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000615/d338a953f2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000615/d338a953f2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Harvey Harrison","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newbold-White_House_(1730).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvey Harrison</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newbold-White_House_(1730).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721750","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newbold%E2%80%93White_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14708094"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/perquimans-county/newbold-white-house-71000615/"}
