It is the only surviving building that can be associated with him. It was originally built by Revolutionary War general Francis Nash, and Governor William A. Graham also lived there from 1869 to 1875.","narrative":"Built in 1772 by Francis Nash, who later died a Revolutionary War general at the Battle of Germantown, this braced oak frame house in Hillsborough, North Carolina, rises two stories over an elevated basement. It has a gable roof, an exterior chimney at each end, and a center-hall plan. A one-story wing added in 1819 gave it an L-shape, and a front porch dates from the late nineteenth century. William Hooper bought the house in 1782 and lived there until he died in 1790. Hooper, a Boston-born lawyer and politician, represented North Carolina in the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence. The house is the only surviving building associated with him. Governor William A. Graham lived there from 1869 to 1875. The property has never been restored and is structurally little altered, though it needed paint and plaster repairs. It was unoccupied when documented, had long served as a private residence, and was not open to visitors.","period_of_significance":"1782-1790","architect_builder":"Francis Nash (builder)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as structurally sound but needing painting and plaster work; never restored and little altered; unoccupied at the time of the form, though long used as a private residence and not open to visitors.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.354987-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/15/7188/47718815/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/71000610_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000610/3e5fc66d38-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000610/3e5fc66d38-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Historic American Buildings Survey","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nash_hooper_house_hillsboro_north_carolina_usa.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Historic American Buildings Survey</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nash_hooper_house_hillsboro_north_carolina_usa.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"73001363","name":"Hillsborough Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/hillsborough-historic-district-73001363/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718815","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nash-Hooper_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6966757"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/orange-county/nash-hooper-house-71000610/"}
