It is rare for a house to retain so much original fabric, be sympathetically adapted to modern life, and be lived in throughout its history by the builder's descendants.","narrative":"Ayr Mount is a brick house on St. Mary's Road in Hillsborough, North Carolina, built by William Kirkland by 1810. Kirkland, thought to have arrived in Hillsborough between 1780 and 1790, apparently named it for Ayr, Scotland, the family home. The brick is laid in Flemish bond, and a two-story main block is flanked by single-story wings under steep gable roofs. A hip-roofed porch was added about 1894 to 1895, replacing a smaller wooden portico. Inside, a transverse hall leads to unequal rooms with paneled wainscot, reeded pilasters and carefully varied mantels, and an open-string stair rises to a finished attic. The house is recognized for its fine woodwork, unusual plan and the high degree of original material that survives. It has also remained in the hands of the builder's descendants throughout its history, and it was adapted sympathetically to modern life.","period_of_significance":"18th and 19th centuries (boxes checked); house built by 1810","architect_builder":"William Kirkland (builder, by 1810)","architectural_style":"Vernacular Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent condition, unaltered and on its original site; used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.639791-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/7216/47721628/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/71000606.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000606/30f6cb2766-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000606/30f6cb2766-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Willthacheerleader18","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AyrMount.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Willthacheerleader18</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AyrMount.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"73001363","name":"Hillsborough Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/hillsborough-historic-district-73001363/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721628","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayr_Mount","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4831630"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/orange-county/ayr-mount-71000606/"}
