It appears to have been built about 1840.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is architecturally one of the finest plantation homes in Lenoir County. It has also been the residence of the prominent Jackson family for over a hundred years. A 1979 boundary revision added that the surrounding land has been a continuously worked farm and is the only intact part of the original 1000-acre farm.","narrative":"Set in a grove of deciduous trees on a high bluff above the Neuse River, this two-story frame house southeast of Kinston was probably built around 1840. It has a brick foundation, a gable roof and a five-bay front facade with a Greek Revival entrance, transom and sidelights, sheltered by a one-story porch. Inside, a center passage holds a two-flight stair, and matching mantels have paired pilasters and paneled end blocks. Jesse Jackson, a planter who served in the state legislature and helped found Kinston's first Baptist church, bought the property about 1850. His son Jesse Jr. was born there in 1854 and became a successful planter and county treasurer. The house has stayed in the family since. It was listed for its architecture, described as among the finest plantation homes in Lenoir County. A 1979 boundary revision added about 108 acres of farmland, outbuildings, a family cemetery and a pecan grove.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival details (door and entrance); described as a plantation house","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and in use as a private residence; the 1979 addendum says the house and land have been in continuous use as a working farm.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.897555-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/52/7210/47721052/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/71000602.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721052","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Jackson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19462578"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/lenoir-county/jackson-jesse-house-71000602/"}
