Its late nineteenth century section has some of the finest Victorian interiors in eastern North Carolina, especially the unaltered dining room of the late 1880s. The house later became the Kennedy Memorial Home orphanage.","narrative":"Cedar Dell is a brick house near Falling Creek in Lenoir County, built about 1820 as a two-story, side-hall dwelling. Late in the nineteenth century it was enlarged and remodeled into a Victorian mansion. The older Federal section keeps its Adamesque mantels, and the finished attic holds the only untouched Federal interiors. The newer section includes an Eastlake-style porch, a bay window, and richly detailed parlors. The dining room, unaltered since the late 1880s, retains its original wallpaper, furniture and draperies. Henry Herring is the earliest known resident. Thomas Jefferson Kennedy bought the house in 1855, and his son William La Fayette Kennedy, a major landowner and bank director, remodeled it. In 1912 Kennedy and his wife deeded the house and about 1,200 acres to the trustees of Thomasville Baptist Orphanage for the Kennedy Memorial Home. The first children were admitted in 1914. The nominated area covers seven acres.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal and Victorian (Eastlake-style porch)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in excellent condition, altered, on its original site, and used as an orphanage (Kennedy Memorial Home).","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.556473-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/46/7210/47721046/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/71000600.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000600/5392dc3e19-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000600/5392dc3e19-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tradewinds","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cedar_Dell.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tradewinds</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cedar_Dell.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"09000684","name":"Kennedy Memorial Home Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/kennedy-memorial-home-historic-district-09000684/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721046","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cedar_Dell","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19460898"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/lenoir-county/cedar-dell-71000600/"}
