It has a gable roof of standing seam tin, beaded weatherboards, and a high brick basement laid in Flemish bond. Evidence points to Josiah Howard as builder around 1798 or soon after, on land he acquired by a 1798 grant. Later owners included the McDaniel family, Julia Bryan, and E. F. Sanderson, for whom the house is named. Its west side is dominated by two Flemish bond chimneys that join into a single stack with a semicircular arch over a door. The east chimney has an exposed face, a feature rare outside the New Bern area. Inside, a center hall is divided by a paneled transverse arch with pilasters, and the main parlor has a heavy modillion cornice and an unusual Federal mantel. These chimneys and interiors are the basis of its significance for architecture.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"Josiah Howard (probable builder)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition and altered; occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.242373-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/26/7210/47721026/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/71000599.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000599/a44cf3bad6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000599/a44cf3bad6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tradewinds","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sanderson_Farm.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tradewinds</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sanderson_Farm.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721026","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanderson_House_(Pollocksville,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q23405783"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/jones-county/sanderson-house-71000599/"}
