It began before 1800 as a one-and-a-half-story frame building. About 1820 Peter Evans, a respected local builder, raised it to two stories and added a two-story wing, changing the house's axis from east-west to north-south. The south front has a two-tiered recessed porch with unusual column capitals, and the west gable carries a pediment, paneled corner posts and rosette decoration. Inside, the parlor has an ornamented doorway, a carved cornice and a late Adam style mantel. The nomination calls it one of the few surviving examples of Evans's work and one of the finest uses of the late Adam style in eastern North Carolina. Reading Sugg bought the property in 1837, and the Sugg family, prominent in early county affairs, kept it until 1879. A large barn from about 1860 stands in the farmyard.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Peter Evans (builder, who enlarged and remodeled the house about 1820)","architectural_style":"Late Adam style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, altered, on its original site, and occupied as a private residence; not open to the public.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.799536-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/96/7200/47720096/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/71000584.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720096","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piney_Prospect","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19987587"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/edgecombe-county/piney-prospect-71000584/"}
