The brick Gothic church was designed by William Percival, begun about 1859-1860 and completed in 1867.","why_significant":"The church is a fine example of the work of William Percival, a noted local architect, in the Early English Gothic style. The churchyard, begun as an arboretum in 1842 under Rev. Joseph Blount Cheshire, holds many trees, some rarely found elsewhere in the United States. Together they are described as one of the most interesting and sophisticated examples of landscape design in North Carolina.","narrative":"Calvary Episcopal Church in Tarboro is a brick Gothic Revival building with a gable roof, buttressed nave, round west window with star-shaped tracery, and two steeples topped with slate-banded spires. Inside, a hammer-beam roof is among its outstanding features. William Percival designed it after the congregation outgrew an earlier small church. Work began around 1859, walls, towers, spires and roof were finished by fall 1860, and construction paused during the war years before completion in 1867. It was consecrated in 1868. Hobart Upjohn designed a Parish House in 1922, joined to the church by a cloister the next year. The churchyard began as an arboretum in 1842 under rector Joseph Blount Cheshire, who converted swampy ground into planted grounds with foreign and native trees. It is also the burial place of several distinguished North Carolinians. The church and yard together are noted for architecture and landscape design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"William Percival (church); Hobart Upjohn (1922 Parish House)","architectural_style":"Early English Gothic","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and unaltered, on its original site; in religious use and occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.309067-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/30/7201/47720130/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/71000580.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000580/2f9cfe3a20-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000580/2f9cfe3a20-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Cornellrockey04","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Calvary_Episcopal_Church_Tarboro_NC.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cornellrockey04</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Calvary_Episcopal_Church_Tarboro_NC.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720130","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvary_Episcopal_Church_and_Churchyard_(Tarboro,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5024186"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/edgecombe-county/calvary-episcopal-church-and-churchyard-71000580/"}
