It was built between 1817 and 1835 as the country seat of the Hyde Clarke family.","why_significant":"The nomination calls Hyde Hall the culminating architectural monument of New York's quasi-feudal system of landholding and one of the nation's greatest private architectural undertakings between 1800 and 1860. Its scale, courtyard plan and neo-classic entertainment wing set it apart from comparable houses, and it survives virtually unchanged with most original furnishings and extensive family papers.","narrative":"Hyde Hall is a vast stone and brick mansion set in Glimmerglass State Park in Otsego County, New York. Built between 1817 and 1835, it was the country seat of the Hyde Clarke family, one of the state's great landowning families. George Clarke designed it together with Philip Hooker, described as upstate New York's leading architect of the period. Three large blocks joined by links and corridors enclose a central court, and the east front has a tetrastyle Doric portico of tooled limestone. Inside are two great rooms with coved ceilings, a circular mahogany stair, two libraries and an early central heating system from about 1833. The house remained in the builder's family until the State of New York acquired it, so it survives with almost no structural change. Most of its documented furniture and a large body of family papers and household accounts remain, and a group of stone and frame outbuildings stands to the east.","period_of_significance":"1817-1835","architect_builder":"George Clarke (1768-1855) and Philip Hooker","architectural_style":"Romantic classical architecture (neo-classic)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as deteriorated and unaltered, with preservation work in progress; owned by the State of New York and used as a museum, with other uses under development.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:38.810883-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/71000555.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000555/7548abbdd1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000555/7548abbdd1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HydeHall_front_december2007.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HydeHall_front_december2007.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"99001136","name":"Glimmerglass Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/glimmerglass-historic-district-99001136/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320946","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyde_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706507"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/otsego-county/hyde-hall-71000555/"}
