It later served as headquarters of the State agricultural experiment station at Geneva, which contributed to scientific agriculture in New York State.","narrative":"Parrott Hall, originally called Denton Place, is a brick Italianate villa on West North Street in Geneva, New York. Nehemiah Denton, a wealthy resident originally from New York City, built it in the early 1850s as his home, and it hosted large social gatherings reported in the local press in 1856. The yellow-painted house has a flat roof with paired wooden brackets, cast iron window cornices, and an ornate cast iron veranda that wraps nearly the whole building. Only the cupola has been lost; the exterior otherwise closely resembles its original appearance. In 1882 the State of New York bought the house, outbuildings and 125 acres for $25,000 to create an agricultural experiment station, and the house became its headquarters, with laboratories, offices, a museum and living quarters. It was later named for Dr. Percival Parrott, the station's first entomologist and later director. The station advanced work on seeds, crops, plant disease, milk production, nurseries and vineyards.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"Nehemiah Denton (built as his residence); no architect named","architectural_style":"Italianate villa","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in fair condition, altered (the cupola has been removed) and unoccupied; owned by the State of New York.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.975281-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/71000553.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000553/a3b1ef1bb6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000553/a3b1ef1bb6-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"The photographer is not known.","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Parrott_Hall_NYSAES_HRHP.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">The photographer is not known.</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Parrott_Hall_NYSAES_HRHP.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320528","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parrott_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7139859"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ontario-county/parrott-hall-71000553/"}
