The walls are laid in English bond beneath a gambrel roof, with a five-bay east front, a central hall plan, three shed dormers and a brick chimney at each end. A wooden porch was added in the late 19th century. The house originally faced the Kings Highway, the main road north of Albany, and that position made it useful to armies. English generals used it as headquarters during the French and Indian War, and Generals Montgomery, Schuyler and Gates did the same in the Revolution. Plans for the Battle of Saratoga were made here, and Governor George Clinton ran the state government from the house for several days in August 1777. It is also noted as an early gambrel-roofed Dutch residence in the upper Hudson Valley.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Wessel Van Schaick","architectural_style":"Dutch residence with gambrel roof","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and altered, on its original site, and in use as a private residence at the time of nomination.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:39.604354-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/71000528.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000528/b01c119b86-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000528/b01c119b86-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ted Fischer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Van_Schaick_House_-_02.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ted Fischer</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Van_Schaick_House_-_02.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316373","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Schaick_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7913650"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/albany-county/van-schaick-house-71000528/"}
