It is a private residence.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the cottage is significant among Macon's notable houses because other examples of the style in the area are more imposing and lack its delicate scale and charm. It is also tied to Willingham, an early Macon civic leader, and later to the Hill family. Its porch railing, gates and mantel add historical interest.","narrative":"Located at 535 College Street on College Hill in Macon, this Victorian frame cottage is believed to have been built about 1856 by Calder Baynard Willingham, a few doors from Wesleyan Female College. Its most prominent feature is a projecting octagonal bay with tall 6/6 shuttered windows, beside a porch that spans the rest of the facade. Double brackets support a delicate cornice, and three gabled dormers rise from the roof. The front may be an 1870s addition, and the ironwork was added in the twentieth century. Willingham was an early civic leader who pushed for a hospital, a bridge and a hotel, and helped found a cotton mill. His son Alfred Ross Willingham was born here in 1878. The house was sold in 1882 to the Hill family, and Laura Hill lived there until 1964. The porch railing came from the old Union depot, where Jefferson Davis spoke in 1886. The house was recognized for its delicate scale and charm among Macon's grander houses.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date c. 1856)","architect_builder":"Calder Baynard Willingham (believed to have built it)","architectural_style":"Victorian frame cottage","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition rated fair; integrity marked as altered; occupied private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.938423-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/71000270.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"74000658","name":"Macon Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/macon-historic-district-74000658/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207115","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/bibb-county/willingham-hill-oneal-cottage-71000270/"}
