It also gained its name when a Union cannon ball struck it during the July 30, 1864 battle of Dunlap Hill. Its parlors were furnished to recreate early sorority rooms from Wesleyan Female College.","narrative":"Built in 1853 by Judge Asa Holt, this white clapboard house on Mulberry Street in Macon is regarded as an outstanding example of town-house Greek Revival architecture in the Old South. A two-story Ionic portico, delicate drawn-wire railing, a small central balcony with wrought iron work, and large shuttered windows define the exterior. Inside are a spacious stair hall, elaborate marble mantels, pine floors and fine plasterwork. The name comes from July 30, 1864, when a cannon ball fired by Union forces under General George Stoneman struck the house during the battle of Dunlap Hill, passing through a porch column and landing unexploded in the hall. A walled garden and brick servants' quarters, now a museum, complete the lot. In 1963 the Sidney Lanier Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy bought the house for use as a museum and chapter house. Its parlors recreate early Wesleyan sorority rooms.","period_of_significance":"1853","architect_builder":"Judge Asa Holt (builder/original owner)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, exterior well preserved and never extensively altered; used for meetings and receptions and open daily as a museum house, with restoration under way.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.187306-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/71000249.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000249/277afa3d87-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000249/277afa3d87-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cannonball_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cannonball_House.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"74000658","name":"Macon Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/macon-historic-district-74000658/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206988","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannonball_House_(Macon,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14686604"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/bibb-county/cannonball-house-71000249/"}
