White painted fluted columns support a triangular pediment, and broad granite stairs lead to a classical entrance that gives the building the look of a temple. The brick walls bear the load, and the window openings are symmetrical. It was the third state capitol erected in California and is the only one remaining from the state's first decade. Government met here for one year and 21 days, from February 4, 1853 to February 25, 1854, before moving to Sacramento. The building then served as a county courthouse, justice court, school, library, theatre, church, police station and city hall. The state received it in 1949, and a restoration in 1956-57 costing $270,000 made it part of the State Park System. It remains in excellent condition on its original site.","period_of_significance":"1853-1854","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, unaltered and on its original site; restored in 1956-57 and operated as a state historic park and museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.13918-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/71000204.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000204/adfd03ae8a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000204/adfd03ae8a-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Epolk","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Benicia_state_capitol_exterior.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Epolk</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Benicia_state_capitol_exterior.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861997","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benicia_Capitol_State_Historic_Park","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4887935"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/solano-county/benicia-capitol-state-historic-park-71000204/"}
