Built in the 1850s, it began as the home of Petronillo Rios. Later accounts say it once belonged to Mission San Miguel and was lived in by W. B. Busherd in the 1860s, who named it Caledonia after his native Scotland. It then served as a stage station and hotel, and later as a school, saloon and dance hall during the era when the Southern Pacific Railroad was being built. Local residents regarded it as one of the finest examples of typical California architecture in the state. Its original mission-style roof tiles were removed in the early 1950s, and the building deteriorated. A group called Friends of the Adobe paid for a protective roof, and the County of San Luis Obispo began an authentic restoration to turn it into a museum and information center. A smaller single-story annex is attached at the north end.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (built 1850s)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Badly deteriorated at the time of nomination; a roof had been added by a citizens' group and county-sponsored restoration was in progress, with plans for use as a museum and information center.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.910493-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/71000190.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000190/838e88f5bf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000190/838e88f5bf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Elf","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RiosCaledoniaAdobeEastSide.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Elf</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RiosCaledoniaAdobeEastSide.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861451","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%ADos-Caledonia_Adobe","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7335423"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-luis-obispo-county/caledonia-adobe-71000190/"}
