It is an early adaptation of industrial materials and factory-made components to domestic architecture. Its walls and balcony rails are gunite, a thin concrete sprayed from hoses onto an expanded steel frame and painted white. Continuous steel-framed windows, based on a 3-foot-5-inch module, form alternating bands of concrete and dark glass that give the facades a hollowed-out, strongly horizontal look. The street entrance is on the top level with bedrooms and a den, the living room, library, dining room and kitchen are below, and a play room and partly roofed pool occupy the lowest level. The interior uses exposed painted steel columns, and Neutra designed the metal furniture and lighting. The house is valued as an early use of factory-made steel sections and prefabricated components in a home, and as a pristine example of the early International style in California. It is frequently visited by architects, historians and students. Few changes have been made since completion.","period_of_significance":"20th Century","architect_builder":"Richard Neutra (architect)","architectural_style":"Early International style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, occupied as a private residence, and largely unaltered since completion; repairs were carried out through the architect's office.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.530367-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/71000147.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000147/75d4fb3ee1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/71000147/75d4fb3ee1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Los Angeles","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lovell_House,_Los_Angeles,_California.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lovell_House,_Los_Angeles,_California.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859293","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovell_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6692217"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/lovell-house-71000147/"}
