It is now a city-owned museum.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an outstanding example of a timber-framed residence showing the transition from 17th-century Jacobean to 18th-century Georgian architecture. It is the oldest surviving house in Edenton and the only extant house in the southern colonies with a Jacobean overhang (jetty) at the second story. Most of its fabric dates from 1758.","narrative":"Cupola House, at 408 South Broad Street in Edenton, is a two-story clapboarded timber house built around 1725 for Richard Sanderson. It takes its name from the octagonal cupola on its gabled roof. In 1756 Francis Corbin, land agent for the Earl of Granville, bought the house and spent two years remodeling it. He added Georgian features including fine interior paneling, a stairway and sliding sash windows, and probably the front portico. The second-story overhang with scrolled brackets recalls 17th-century New England, while the buttressed brick end chimneys echo Virginia. The plan is a center hall with one large room on one side and two smaller rooms on the other. The house is the oldest surviving in Edenton and the only known southern colonial house with a Jacobean jetty. Paneling sold to the Brooklyn Museum in 1918 was reconstructed during a 1964-1966 restoration. Today the city owns the house, and it operates as a museum.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":"not known (built for Richard Sanderson c. 1725; remodeled by Francis Corbin, 1756-58)","architectural_style":"Transition from Jacobean to Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Excellent condition; restored 1964-1966, owned by the City of Edenton, administered by the Cupola House Association and open to the public as a museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.394824-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/7187/47718767/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/70000889_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000889/05aa49ab33-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000889/05aa49ab33-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Harvey Harrison","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cupola_House_(1758).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvey Harrison</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cupola_House_(1758).JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"73001316","name":"Edenton Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/edenton-historic-district-73001316/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718767","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupola_House_(Edenton,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5194556"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/chowan-county/cupola-house-70000889/"}
