Franklin Street in Richmond, Virginia, built in 1845 for Horace Kent from plans by Isaiah Rogers of Boston and enlarged in 1904.","why_significant":"The house is the only identified standing residence designed by Isaiah Rogers, a noted Greek Revival architect. It also shows 1904 Colonial Revival alterations made for Granville G. Valentine, while its western double parlour keeps the original 1845 Gothic theme. With its park-like quarter-block setting across from Linden Row, it contributes to the historic character of Franklin Street.","narrative":"Standing at 12 E. Franklin Street in Richmond, this three-story stuccoed brick mansion was built in 1845 for Horace Kent from plans by Boston architect Isaiah Rogers. Rogers was known for hotel designs and was praised by Talbot Hamlin as one of the most remarkable designers of the Greek Revival movement. This is the only identified surviving house of his design. In 1904 Granville G. Valentine bought it and had it substantially altered. A two-story, three-bay portico with Roman Ionic columns replaced a one-story iron porch, though the old ironwork was kept between the columns. Inside, the hall and east rooms were remodeled in Colonial Revival taste, with a triple flight of stairs and Corinthian columns. The western double parlour still has its 1845 Gothic character, with clustered columns and a three-centered arch. Set on a park-like quarter block across from the Greek Revival townhouses of Linden Row, the house helps preserve the historic look of Franklin Street.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Isaiah Rogers of Boston (plans, 1845)","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (1904 alterations) with Gothic Revival double parlour (1845)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and altered; the form marks the property as an unoccupied private residence with preservation work in progress.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.812573-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/6828/41682868/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/70000882.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000882/99245ef103-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000882/99245ef103-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Historic American Buildings Survey","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kent-Valentine_House_Richmond_VA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Historic American Buildings Survey</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kent-Valentine_House_Richmond_VA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"71000982","name":"James River and Kanawha Canal Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/james-river-and-kanawha-canal-historic-district-71000982/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682868","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent%E2%80%93Valentine_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6391582"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/kent-valentine-house-70000882/"}
