Donnan and John Asher.","why_significant":"It is one of two commercial row buildings with full cast-iron fronts erected on East Main Street when the area was rebuilt after the fire of 1865. It is described as one of the finest and most ornate iron-front rows surviving in the city. Its Italianate facade recalls Venetian Renaissance palaces and shows how cheap, mass-produced decoration gave elegance to a utilitarian building.","narrative":"Built around 1866 by William S. Donnan and John Asher, this four-story commercial building at 1207-1211 East Main Street in Richmond has a front of cast iron over brick, while its side and rear walls are common-bond brick. It was part of the rebuilding of East Main Street after the fire of 1865, and it is one of two commercial rows there with full cast-iron fronts. The facade is divided into three sections of four bays each, marked by Corinthian pilasters, columns and engaged columns. Arched, double-section windows with keystones and four-over-four sash recall Florentine Renaissance design. An Italianate entablature with large scrolled consoles caps the front. The facade stayed almost unaltered until 1966, when a modern entrance removed the original decoration from the four central ground-floor bays. The interior has been changed repeatedly for commercial tenants. The building is recognized as an excellent example of Victorian architectural decoration applied to a practical commercial structure.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":"William S. The central ground-floor shop front was altered in 1966 with a modern entrance, and the interior has been substantially altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.964794-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/41/6829/41682941/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/70000879.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000879/51894f6cc8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000879/51894f6cc8-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Donnan-Asher_Iron_Front_Building,_1207-1211_East_Main_Street_(Richmond,_Independent_City,_Virginia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Donnan-Asher_Iron_Front_Building,_1207-1211_East_Main_Street_(Richmond,_Independent_City,_Virginia).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"71000982","name":"James River and Kanawha Canal Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/james-river-and-kanawha-canal-historic-district-71000982/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682941","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donnan%E2%80%93Asher_Iron-front_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16830044"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/donnan-asher-iron-front-building-70000879/"}
