Its paneled rooms are described as the finest series of original paneled rooms in Williamsburg. It was also the home of Peyton Randolph, speaker of the House of Burgesses and president of the Continental Congress in 1774.","narrative":"Standing at the northeast corner of Nicholson and North England Streets in Williamsburg, this frame house grew in three stages between 1715 and 1782. William Robertson built the square western section around a central chimney in 1715 or 1716. An eastern section followed about 1724, and a two-story connecting part was added after the two adjoining lots came under one owner. The eastern section is now a conjectural reconstruction, while the west and center parts are restored originals. Features include a two-story north porch, a wooden belt board, a double gable W-form roof in the western section, and yellow pine, oak and walnut woodwork. Its paneled rooms are described as the finest original series in Williamsburg. Peyton Randolph, speaker of the House of Burgesses and president of the Continental Congress in 1774, lived here from 1745 until his death in 1775. Colonial Williamsburg completed restoration in 1968.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (specific dates 1715 or 1716, 1724, and c. 1730)","architect_builder":"William Robertson (western section, 1715 or 1716)","architectural_style":"Early Georgian frame house","criteria":[],"status_note":"Maintained in excellent condition; the center and western sections are regularly open to the public, while the reconstructed eastern section is a private residence not open to the public.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.162785-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/6791/41679176/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/70000863_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000863/56a535ebef-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000863/56a535ebef-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jrcla2","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peyton_Randolph_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jrcla2</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peyton_Randolph_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"06000365","name":"Merchants Square and Resort Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/merchants-square-and-resort-historic-district-06000365/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679176","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peyton_Randolph_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7179632"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/williamsburg/randolph-peyton-house-70000863/"}
