Its construction date is uncertain, placed between 1643 and 1745.","why_significant":"The house served as the official residence of the ministers of Hungar's Parish from 1745 until 1850. It is notable for its exceptionally fine brickwork and an almost complete room of eighteenth-century paneling. It may also incorporate Charlton's seventeenth-century dwelling.","narrative":"Near Franktown on Virginia's Eastern Shore, this brick glebe house sits on land Stephen Charlton patented in 1638 and expanded in 1641. His 1654 will directed that the land pass to the parish if his daughter died without heirs, and Hungar's Parish acquired it in 1704. The house rises one and a half stories under a gable roof with dormers and two interior end chimneys. Its brick is laid in Flemish bond with English bond below the water table, with extensive glazed headers and flat arches over the openings of the five-bay east front. A central stair hall is flanked by two rooms on each side, each with a corner chimney. The northwest room keeps its cornice, paneled dado and paneled chimney breast. The construction date is uncertain, placed between 1643 and 1745, and the house may incorporate Charlton's earlier dwelling. From 1745 until 1850 it was the official residence of the parish ministers.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked as deteriorated, with preservation work in progress; current use is a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.632511-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/48/6822/41682248/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/70000817.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000817/5f36441cad-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000817/5f36441cad-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"GeorgiaByler","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glebe_of_Hungar%27s_Parish.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">GeorgiaByler</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glebe_of_Hungar%27s_Parish.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682248","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glebe_of_Hungar%27s_Parish","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15221740"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/northampton-county/glebe-of-hungars-parish-70000817/"}
