It was built around 1825 for Conrade Webb.","why_significant":"The nomination calls the house one of the most impressive and ornamented Federalist structures in Virginia, despite a somewhat provincial handling. It was the centerpiece of one of the most considerable plantations in ante-bellum Virginia and was associated with the prominent Webb family, including George Webb, author of a manual for justices of the peace.","narrative":"Hampstead is a brick Federalist mansion built around 1825 on a high bluff above the Pamunkey River in New Kent County, Virginia. Conrade Webb, who inherited the plantation from his father Foster Webb, built the house during the 1820s. The Webbs had been prominent in the county since George Webb arrived early in the eighteenth century and wrote a widely used manual for justices of the peace. The two-story house has a hipped roof, Flemish bond brickwork and a central pedimented portico with an original column design. Inside, a free-standing spiral stair rises beside a three-arched screen, and the rooms have decorative plaster cornices and King of Prussia marble mantels. Outbuildings include a granary ruin, an eighteenth-century cottage and an icehouse. After Webb's death in 1842 the house passed to relatives and left the family in 1889. The property declined after the Civil War but has since recovered much of its former standing. It is still used as a private residence.","period_of_significance":"19th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federalist","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is stated as excellent and unaltered, with only minor exterior and interior alterations; it is used as a private residence and listed as occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.956748-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/46/6820/41682046/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/70000812.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000812/4d7a6b3cab-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000812/4d7a6b3cab-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jjmusgrove","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hampstead_Side_View.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jjmusgrove</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hampstead_Side_View.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682046","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hampstead_(Tunstall,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712452"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/new-kent-county/hampstead-70000812/"}
