It also does not appear to have been vandalized by Northern troops during the Civil War. Notable people attended services there, including Patrick Henry and Dolly Madison.","narrative":"Fork Church is a brick colonial church in rural Hanover County, Virginia, near Ashland. It was erected around 1736-40 as the second Lower Church of St. Martin's Parish, replacing an earlier church believed to have stood on the same or a nearby site. The name comes from the land between the North Anna and South Anna Rivers, which join to form the Pamunkey. The building measures about 34 by 74 feet, with 22-inch walls laid in Flemish bond with glazed headers, rubbed brick at the windows and corners, and a gable roof with its original modillion cornice. Inside, the colonial pews were cut down in 1830 and partly reused, and the original rear gallery survives. A marble font came from Mattaponi Church. The church is notable for retaining so many early fittings, including a nineteenth-century pipe organ. Patrick Henry, Dolly Madison and novelist Thomas Nelson Page attended services there.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Virginia colonial church (rectangular, no transepts, front and side door, simple gable roof)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is listed as good; the building is occupied, in religious use, and on its original site, with some alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.299652-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/87/6811/41681187/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/70000801.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000801/685e1f8896-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000801/685e1f8896-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"unknown HABS photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fork_Church_HABS_VA1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">unknown HABS photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fork_Church_HABS_VA1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681187","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fork_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712326"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/hanover-county/fork-church-70000801/"}
