Warner Washington, a first cousin of George Washington, acquired about 1600 acres around the time of his 1765 marriage to Hannah Fairfax and built the house, probably finished by 1770. The central block is two and a half stories with a hipped roof and walls of irregular native limestone ashlar, flanked by one-story wings. Its plan and stairhall closely resemble Kenmore, though it lacks Kenmore's rich plasterwork, and the surviving woodwork and paneling are of fine quality. Old outbuildings include a large barn and an enlarged overseer's house, and the gardens hold English boxwood, some possibly from the eighteenth century. George Washington visited his cousin here many times, as his diaries show. Fairfield ranks among the most impressive stone colonial mansions in northern Virginia, and its link to the first President adds to its importance.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"Warner Washington (builder); architect John Arris suggested as a possible influence","architectural_style":"Colonial; stone mansion related to Tidewater Virginia houses such as Kenmore","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, unaltered, on its original site, and occupied as a private residence; later highway work on Route 340 was agreed to include replacement of screening plantings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.459489-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/26/6802/41680226/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/70000787.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000787/eac44ac222-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000787/eac44ac222-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Sevenofnine7o9 at English Wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fairfield_estate.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Sevenofnine7o9 at English Wikipedia</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fairfield_estate.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":null,"wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairfield_(Berryville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5430231"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/clarke-county/fairfield-70000787/"}
