It includes a stone church with twin bell towers and an adjoining convento. Founded in San Antonio in 1731 by friars of the college of Queretaro, its church took about 20 years to build. It stands largely as it did in the eighteenth century, with the original walls, towers, nave vaulting, dome and most of the convento intact.","narrative":"Mission Concepcion is a complex of Spanish colonial mission buildings about three miles south of Alamo Plaza in San Antonio. Its west-facing church has massive twin bell towers, a steep pediment over the entrance with fluted engaged columns, and heavily buttressed limestone walls nearly four feet thick. Inside, a tunnel-vaulted nave, a low dome with a lantern, and traces of original frescoes survive. A one-story convento with stone arches and tunnel vaults extends to the south. Friars of the college of Queretaro moved their east Texas missions to San Antonio, and Concepcion was established on March 5, 1731. The church took about 20 years to build and was dedicated on December 8, 1755. The mission was secularized in 1793 and abandoned by 1819. U.S. troops later occupied it, and it was used as a cattle pen before reopening for worship in 1887. It remains an active church open to visitors and is maintained in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (specific dates 1731, 1755)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Maintained in excellent condition; still used as an active church and open to visitors.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.739681-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/13/9712/40971213/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/70000740.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000740/84b7753c4d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000740/84b7753c4d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Liveon001 ©Travis Witt","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mission_Concepcion_San_Antonio_1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Liveon001 ©Travis Witt</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mission_Concepcion_San_Antonio_1.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100002470","name":"St. John's Seminary","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/st-johns-seminary-100002470/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971213","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mission_Concepcion","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2312403"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/bexar-county/mission-concepcion-70000740/"}
