It is considered one of the finest of Benjamin's churches. Its exterior is little altered, while the interior was restored in 1963 after 19th-century changes.","narrative":"Old West Church is a large, square, two-story brick church at 131 Cambridge Street in Boston. Asher Benjamin designed it in 1806 for a Congregational congregation. The main block measures about 75 feet square and is laid in Flemish bond, with stepped gables. A three-and-one-half-story projecting porch rises to a square tower with a cupola and gilded dome, reaching 96 feet. Inside, original galleries on Composite columns wrap three sides of the auditorium beneath a 42-foot central dome. Its plan and elevation were widely copied across New England, and it is regarded as one of Benjamin's finest churches. The last service of the original congregation was held in 1892. The interior was then remodelled, and from 1896 until 1960 the building served as a branch public library. A Massachusetts General Court order made it available to the Methodist Conference in 1962. The interior was restored to its early 19th-century appearance in 1963, and it reopened as a United Methodist church in 1964.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (1806)","architect_builder":"Asher Benjamin, builder and architect","architectural_style":"Federal-Adamesque","criteria":[],"status_note":"Excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site; in use as a United Methodist church and open to visitors.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.755397-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/7938/63793835/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/70000691_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000691/4045ecd8c5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000691/4045ecd8c5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_West_Church_Boston_Asher_Benjamin_1806.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_West_Church_Boston_Asher_Benjamin_1806.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"66000130","name":"Beacon Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/beacon-hill-historic-district-66000130/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793835","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_West_Church_(Boston)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1597350"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/suffolk-county/old-west-church-70000691/"}
