Designed by Samuel McIntire and built in 1806-07, it was named for Alexander Hamilton. Its construction followed a split between Federalists and Republicans that divided the Salem Assemblies in 1805. The walls are laid in Flemish bond, and the gable end facing Cambridge Street is treated as a pediment with a large semicircular window. A one-story portico with four wooden columns shelters the main entrance. Tall Palladian windows light the sides, and the north side preserves the McIntire eagle. Inside, a two-story ballroom keeps its original spring dance floor. The front first-floor rooms were finished in 1824, and a new front door was probably added in 1845. The property is regarded as an architecturally distinguished Federal-Adamesque public building. It remains in good condition, little altered, and still hosts the Salem Assemblies, as it has for more than 160 years.","period_of_significance":"1805-1824","architect_builder":"Samuel McIntire","architectural_style":"Federal-Adamesque or Early Republican","criteria":[],"status_note":"In good condition, little altered, still used for its original purpose, and open to visitors.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:53.397869-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/71/7936/63793671/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/70000543_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000543/8799007147-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000543/8799007147-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hamilton_Hall_(Salem).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hamilton_Hall_(Salem).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"73000312","name":"Chestnut Street District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/chestnut-street-district-73000312/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793671","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilton_Hall_(Salem,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1869673"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/hamilton-hall-70000543/"}
