It has remained substantially intact, with an original interior carved in the Adam style. The only serious change was the removal of the original pierced stair balustrade, which has been reconstructed from surviving balusters.","narrative":"Built in 1804-05 at 128 Essex Street in Salem, this three-story brick town house was designed and constructed by the Salem architect and carver Samuel McIntire for the merchant John Gardner. The walls are laid in Flemish bond with white marble trim, under a hipped roof with a balustraded parapet. The five-bay south facade has a central door framed by reeded pilasters and sheltered by an elliptical porch with slender Corinthian columns. Inside, a wide center hall divides the rooms into pairs, and the mantels, cornices and door trim are richly carved in the Adam style with garlands, wheat sheaves and baskets of fruit. The house is widely regarded as McIntire's masterpiece and a prime illustration of his mature neoclassical work. Later owners included Nathaniel West, Captain Joseph White and the Pingree family, who held it until giving it to the Essex Institute in 1933. It remains largely original and is open to visitors as a furnished historic house.","period_of_significance":"1804-1805","architect_builder":"Samuel McIntire","architectural_style":"Adamesque-Federal (neoclassical)","criteria":[],"status_note":"In excellent condition and open to visitors as a furnished historic house exhibit.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.999895-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/7936/63793667/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/70000541_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000541/4b3f4af2ac-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000541/4b3f4af2ac-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SalemMA_GardnerPingreeHouse_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SalemMA_GardnerPingreeHouse_1.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"76000303","name":"Salem Common Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/salem-common-historic-district-76000303/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793667","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardner%E2%80%93Pingree_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5522577"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/gardner-pingree-house-70000541/"}
