Amos Bennett, who had studied early American builders' handbooks, was the builder. The house went up in two stages: a two-story central block, then lower flanking wings added shortly before the Civil War. Its low hipped roof, denticular cornice, corner pilasters, Ionic and Doric detailing, carved mantels and massive central stairway reflect the Greek Revival spirit. It was the first of five large houses on the hill south of town once called \"Floraville,\" and one of three in the Greek Revival style. The Warren County Historical Society bought the property in 1944 and deeded it to the State of Ohio in 1945. In the late 1960s the exterior brick was sandblasted, the wood trim restored and the interior room arrangement returned to its original layout. It operates as a museum.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific date 1836)","architect_builder":"Builder Amos Bennett; built for John Milton Williams","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored in the late 1960s by the Ohio Historical Society to its original appearance and furnished with period pieces; condition listed as excellent and operated as a state memorial museum.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.023434-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/70000521.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000521/b61f28aa96-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000521/b61f28aa96-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Floraville2","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glendower.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Floraville2</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glendower.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"84002102","name":"Floraville Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/floraville-historic-district-84002102/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991835","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glendower_State_Memorial","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716424"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/warren-county/glendower-70000521/"}
