The furnace was erected around 1850 in the Hanging Rock Iron Region, a belt of land with iron ore, timber, limestone and water power. The region produced charcoal iron until 1916 and was among the nation's leading iron producers during the Civil War. A furnace of this kind supported a community of several hundred workers, including teamsters, ore diggers, blacksmiths, charcoal burners and storekeepers. Only the stone stack survived when reconstruction began in 1966. Since then the iron master's residence, store, charcoal shed, engine house, casting house, charging house, foundry, shop and scale pit have been or are being rebuilt. Building locations were confirmed by a 1967 archaeological investigation and by interviews with a former blacksmith. The Ohio Historical Society bought the 270-acre tract in 1935 and runs the site as a museum. The nomination covers 77 acres.","period_of_significance":"19th Century; specific date 1850","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the state historical society and operated as a museum.
