Excavations at two circular enclosures in the valley produced pottery, flint spear points and other items characteristic of the Hopewell culture, suggesting Hopewell builders and a likely ceremonial purpose. It is one of six hilltop enclosures in southern Ohio, all apparently Hopewell work.","narrative":"Fort Hill is a prehistoric hilltop enclosure in Highland County, Ohio, rising 1283 feet above sea level on a butte-like formation capped with Berea sandstone. A stone and earthen wall about 1 5/8 miles long circles the summit and encloses roughly 40 acres. The wall varies from 6 to 15 feet high, is about 40 feet wide at the base, and is broken by 33 gateways. Three depressions inside are thought to be borrow pits. Two circular earthworks lie in the valley to the south, and one revealed the outline of a large rectangular building, possibly a workshop for stone implements. Excavations there produced pottery and flint points typical of the Hopewell culture, which probably built the site as a ceremonial center between 300 B.C. and 600 A.D. The state and the Ohio Historical Society began acquiring the land in 1932, and a site museum opened in 1968. About 400 acres of the 1200-acre memorial were listed for their prehistoric importance.","period_of_significance":"300 B.C. - 600 A.D.","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is stated as excellent and unaltered, on its original site, in public ownership and used as a park; a site museum opened in 1968.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:10.136048-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/70000500.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989326","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/highland-county/fort-hill-state-park-70000500/"}
