Fourteen took part, thirteen as officers, and several held civilian offices as well. The house was the birthplace of his four youngest sons and was dedicated in 1948 as a memorial to the family.","narrative":"Built about 1837 on the southwest corner of the Public Square in Carrollton, this ell-shaped, two-story brick house was the home of lawyer Daniel McCook, the first clerk of the court of common pleas in newly organized Carroll County. It has Federal proportions, a gable roof, a chimney at each end, a light Classical cornice and stone foundation and lintels. A stone-arched doorway with side- and fan-lights is centered on the five-part facade. Inside, a hall and stairway separate two large rooms. The McCook family lived here until 1853, and four of Daniel's youngest sons were born in the house. Daniel and eight sons, with five sons of his brother John, served the Union in the Civil War, and thirteen of the fourteen became officers. Daniel died of wounds received at Buffington Island. The State of Ohio acquired the house in 1941 and dedicated it in 1948 as a memorial. Part of it now displays family and Civil War memorabilia.","period_of_significance":"1837","architect_builder":"Daniel McCook (erected the house)","architectural_style":"Federal proportions","criteria":[],"status_note":"Preserved by the Ohio Historical Society as a museum; condition listed as good, with one room restored and others furnished in period style.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:09.951105-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/70000486.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000486/f82db7f17c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000486/f82db7f17c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bwsmith84 (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:McCook_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bwsmith84 (talk)</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:McCook_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987015","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_McCook_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5218096"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/carroll-county/mccook-daniel-house-70000486/"}
