The front has a projecting pedimented pavilion with a Doric-pilastered entrance, and a two-stage wooden cupola with clock faces and an ogival roof. Inside, the first floor holds a large courtroom with a high-backed, pedimented judge's chair. The second floor has an assembly hall, also used as a ballroom, with full-height hand-carved white pine paneling, said to be the largest paneled room in the colonies. The architect is unknown, though Gilbert Leigh and John Hawkes have both been suggested. It was recognized as one of the finest surviving Georgian public buildings in the Southern colonies, largely unaltered and with most original interiors intact. It continues to serve as the county courthouse and welcomes visitors.","period_of_significance":"1767","architect_builder":"Unknown; attributed to Gilbert Leigh and more recently to John Hawkes","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Maintained in excellent condition; still serves as the county courthouse and is open to visitors during regular business hours.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.038889-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/65/7187/47718765/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/70000447_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000447/8a857b5aee-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000447/8a857b5aee-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Leah Rucker","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chowan_County_Courthouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Leah Rucker</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chowan_County_Courthouse.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"73001316","name":"Edenton Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/edenton-historic-district-73001316/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718765","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chowan_County_Courthouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5105525"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/chowan-county/chowan-county-courthouse-70000447/"}
