It is also significant for its architecture and religious history. The building and its setting are described as among the most picturesque aspects of North Carolina's oldest town.","narrative":"Brick walls laid in Flemish bond with glazed headers form St. Thomas Episcopal Church, a modest building of about thirty by fifty-two feet on Craven Street in Bath. It looks rectangular but is actually several feet out of square. The east and west gables have been rebuilt, and an unexplained curved band of moulded brick sits above the west doorway. Inside, a very narrow gallery over the west entrance is reached by a corner stair. The parish dates to 1701, and the town of Bath was incorporated in 1705 with land reserved for a church. Construction began in 1734, partly by mistake in the middle of Craven Street rather than on the church lot. The building was apparently nearly complete by 1739 and was reported finished in 1762. After the Revolutionary War it fell into disrepair and was altered. It is regarded as the earliest surviving church in North Carolina and has served worshippers continuously for more than 230 years.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent condition and altered; used continuously for religious services.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.215114-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/7190/47719019/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/70000440.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000440/7628a9fdfe-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000440/7628a9fdfe-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Frances Benjamin Johnston","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Thomas%27_Church_Bath_Beaufort_County_North_Carolina_by_Frances_Benjamin_Johnston.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Frances Benjamin Johnston</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Thomas%27_Church_Bath_Beaufort_County_North_Carolina_by_Frances_Benjamin_Johnston.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"70000437","name":"Bath Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/bath-historic-district-70000437/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719019","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Thomas_Episcopal_Church_(Bath,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7591946"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/beaufort-county/st-thomas-episcopal-church-70000440/"}
