Dr. Thomas Bratton Winn laid the foundations, and Robert Sims Burch completed the house in 1856 using slave labor. An overhanging front facade rests on six square columns, and the doorway has sidelights, a fixed transom, a panelled door, fluted pilasters and a dentil doorhood. A dentil cornice runs around the whole house, and the interior keeps nearly all of its original Greek Revival woodwork. The house once sat back from the road in a magnolia-lined lane but was later moved, lowered and placed at its current site. A detached kitchen and dining room burned in 1888 and were replaced by additions, which were later separated and now serve as a house on the next lot. Robert Toombs took refuge here during the Civil War. The Mitchell family then owned it for more than 90 years. It was listed for its exceptional craftsmanship and design.","period_of_significance":"c.1848-56","architect_builder":"Robert Sims Burch (builder, 1856); foundations laid by Dr. Thomas Bratton Winn","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition, occupied, and used as a private residence; the house was moved from its original foundation, lowered and set at its present site.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.93965-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/70000220.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000220/b31cbf03f5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000220/b31cbf03f5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Burch_Mitchell_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Burch_Mitchell_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209621","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burch-Mitchell_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30622022"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/thomas-county/burch-mitchell-house-70000220/"}
