Stephens Memorial State Park, Crawfordville, Taliaferro County, Georgia. It was built about 1830 and remodeled by Stephens about 1870.","why_significant":"It was the home of Alexander H. Stephens, Vice-President of the Confederacy and later Governor of Georgia, from 1845 until his death in 1883. The house has changed little since 1845 apart from Stephens' own alterations, and it is maintained much as it looked in early 1866. The form describes it as a significant architectural reflection of Stephens' character and life.","narrative":"Liberty Hall is a two-story white frame house in Alexander H. Stephens Memorial State Park at Crawfordville, Georgia. Built about 1830, it has a long shed porch across the front, a central hallway with two rooms on each side, and a rear ell holding a library and an office. Outbuildings include servants' quarters, a wash house, wood and smoke houses, and a gas plant that produced the first home gas-lighting system in Georgia. Alexander H. Stephens lived here from 1845 until his death in 1883, including the years he served as Vice-President of the Confederacy. He was arrested in the library in May 1865. A memorial association bought the property two years after his death and erected a marble statue on the lawn. The state took ownership in 1932 and opened the house to the public in 1935. The house has changed little since Stephens' time and is valued as a reflection of his life and of antebellum Southern political history.","period_of_significance":"19th Century (specific dates c. 1845, c. 1870; built c. 1830)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Described as \"Native Son Early Republican\" with a piazza in no particular classical order, not a grand Greek Revival facade","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition marked excellent and unaltered, on its original site; operated as a public house museum in a state park, owned by the Georgia State Parks Department.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.796875-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/70000216.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000216/76bf73d58a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000216/76bf73d58a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ezratrumpet at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Liberty_Hall.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Ezratrumpet at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Liberty_Hall.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"06000124","name":"Crawfordville Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/crawfordville-historic-district-06000124/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209570","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Hall_(Crawfordville,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6541740"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/taliaferro-county/liberty-hall-70000216/"}
