It shows the limits of Mexican adobe construction, in contrast to the freer Monterey-colonial style of the nearby Castro adobe. A later frame addition at the rear reflects American influence.","narrative":"Anza House is a small adobe dwelling at the corner of Franklin and Third Streets in San Juan Bautista, California. Built sometime between about 1820 and 1840, it is made of poles and mud bricks, which limited both its height and the number of its openings. A covered verandah protected the water-soluble adobe walls. The low, dimly lit building has an entrance near the western end of its north facade, opening into a single room. Later changes include a frame addition on the south side, a redwood-shingled roof, six- and twelve-pane windows, and double doors on the north side. Whitewashed plaster covers the walls but has chipped away in places, exposing the adobe shell. The house was recognized as an excellent example of a small, one-storey California adobe from the Mexican period, and it can be compared with the nearby Castro adobe, which shows the freer Monterey-colonial style. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Juan de Anza","architectural_style":"Mexican period adobe","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good; the form lists present use as private residence, and notes whitewashed plaster chipped away in places, especially at the western end.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:31.208668-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/70000140_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000140/c54be61fec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/70000140/c54be61fec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Eugene Zelenko","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USA-San_Juan_Bautista-Juan_de_Anza_House-1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Eugene Zelenko</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USA-San_Juan_Bautista-Juan_de_Anza_House-1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858008","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_de_Anza_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2518629"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-benito-county/anza-house-70000140/"}
