It is also among the few seventeenth-century Virginia houses to keep a significant portion of its original interior woodwork.","narrative":"Built in the latter half of the seventeenth century, this brick house in Virginia Beach is known as the Wishart-Boush House or James Wishart House. Its steep gable roof, massive T-shaped chimneys with tiled splays, English bond brickwork, glazed headers on the gable ends and brick corbels at the eaves give it a distinctly seventeenth-century character. Inside, a Jacobean staircase with turned balusters and a square newel post, along with large mantels, survives in a two-room plan. The land was sold by Adam Thorowgood to William Richerson in 1653, then to James Wishart in 1673. It is unclear whether Richerson or Wishart built the house. The Wishart family held it until 1795, when it was sold to William Boush, whose family inherited it for several generations. The nomination describes it as one of the oldest brick houses in the United States, noting later changes such as a rear brick ell and altered dormers.","period_of_significance":"17th Century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Seventeenth-century medieval design","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is marked fair; the form checks the property as unoccupied.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.085741-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/9/6840/41684009/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/69000363.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000363/af56d96572-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000363/af56d96572-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"SueCorcoran","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wishart-Boush-Lynnhaven_House_Va_Beach_9_2012_(1).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">SueCorcoran</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wishart-Boush-Lynnhaven_House_Va_Beach_9_2012_(1).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41684009","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynnhaven_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712762"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/virginia-beach/lynnhaven-house-additional-documentation-69000363/"}
