Old, River and Rock Streets and Cockade Alley. The present building dates to 1878-79 and is city-owned.","why_significant":"The form describes the market as an unusually fine example of an urban building type that is fast disappearing. Its octagonal shape and well-handled details give it a distinction rarely found in utilitarian structures. It also remains a working market on land given in trust in 1806 for market use.","narrative":"Petersburg's City Market is an octagonal brick building, ninety-three feet across, set in a spacious square bounded by W. Old, River and Rock Streets and Cockade Alley. Each side of the ground floor has three arched bays of double Romanesque-style windows that create the look of an arcade. A large metal canopy on elaborate iron brackets circles the building, and above it on each side are three arched windows that have since been bricked in. Corbeled brickwork marks the cornice, and a low octagonal cupola with louvered arched windows crowns the hipped roof. The land was given in trust in 1806 by merchant Robert Bolling, who intended it always to be used for a market. The present building, put up in 1878-79, is the fourth on the site, the first having been built in 1787. Its distinctive shape and details, and its continuing use as a market, made it notable as a surviving example of a disappearing urban building type.","period_of_significance":"1878-79","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Romanesque style windows on an octagonal plan","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in fair condition; described as a still functioning institution.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.963816-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/6825/41682528/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/69000345.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000345/1ff4d6a403-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000345/1ff4d6a403-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CityMarketPetersburg.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CityMarketPetersburg.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"80004314","name":"Petersburg Old Town Historic District (Additional Documentation)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/petersburg-old-town-historic-district-additional-documentation-80004314/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682528","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_Market_(Petersburg,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5123297"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/petersburg/city-market-69000345/"}
