Its mix of medieval and classical features makes it a transitional colonial structure. It also keeps the only surviving medieval-style wicket door in America.","narrative":"Yeocomico Church is a brick colonial church near Tucker Hill in Westmoreland County, Virginia, laid out in the shape of an irregular T under a steep gable roof with splayed eaves. Its brickwork varies widely, from Flemish to English bond, and carries inscriptions including \"1706 IGI\" and the initials of eight vestrymen or workmen. Inside the porch is a Tudor-style battened wicket door flanked by crude brick Doric columns, the only door of its medieval type known to survive in America. The altar sits in the east wing while the nave is in the north wing. A frame chapel stood on the site around 1655. Whether the present building dates from 1706 or evolved through later additions is unclear. It is the only surviving colonial church in the county. After the Revolution it was used as a barracks, fell into decay, and later housed Methodists and soldiers before Episcopalians reclaimed it by 1844. The original holy table and octagonal marble font remain.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Transitional colonial, blending medieval and classical features (Jacobean-style holy table; Doric pilasters)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and used as a rural Episcopal church; renovated in 1906, with further repairs in 1928 and 1958-59.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.019159-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/20/6841/41684120/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/69000331.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000331/f9045b1c35-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000331/f9045b1c35-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yeocomico_Church,_State_Route_606,_Tucker_Hill,_Westmoreland_County,_VA_HABS_VA,97-_,1-1.tif\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yeocomico_Church,_State_Route_606,_Tucker_Hill,_Westmoreland_County,_VA_HABS_VA,97-_,1-1.tif"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100005837","name":"Occupacia-Rappahannock Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/occupacia-rappahannock-rural-historic-district-100005837/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41684120","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeocomico_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713572"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/westmoreland-county/yeocomico-church-69000331/"}
