It also stresses the fine stone trim and interior woodwork, which make it one of Virginia's most richly appointed early-Georgian mansions. The house has always remained with the builder's direct descendants, and its setting has changed little since the eighteenth century.","narrative":"Sabine Hall is a large brick mansion set on a ridge above the Rappahannock River in Richmond County, Virginia. Landon Carter, son of Robert \"King\" Carter of Corotoman, built it about 1730. The seven-bay front is laid in Flemish bond with random glazed headers, with stone sills and lintels and a narrow, fully rusticated stone pavilion at the center of each long front. The roof has been lowered from its original higher hip, and wings were added, including a west wing in 1929. Inside, a fully paneled central hall measuring 18 by 48 feet holds a staircase with a scrolled soffit and twisted walnut balusters, which one architectural historian called one of the most superb architectural documents in the country. Carter served in the House of Burgesses and wrote political tracts, including one on repealing the Stamp Act. The house has stayed in the hands of his descendants, and outlines of the original formal garden remain.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"Landon Carter (builder, about 1730)","architectural_style":"Early Georgian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, altered, on its original site, occupied and used as a private residence; the roof has been lowered and wings added.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:58.140282-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/6828/41682856/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/69000277.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000277/15231621bd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000277/15231621bd-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sabine_Hall_(Richmond,_Virginia).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sabine_Hall_(Richmond,_Virginia).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100005837","name":"Occupacia-Rappahannock Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/occupacia-rappahannock-rural-historic-district-100005837/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682856","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabine_Hall_(Warsaw,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7396156"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/sabine-hall-69000277/"}
