It is also architecturally notable as a small house with the qualities of a large mansion, similar to Mount Airy and likely influenced by William Adam's Vitruvius Scoticus.","narrative":"Menokin is a small but formally detailed stone house in Richmond County, Virginia, built by Colonel John Tayloe of Mount Airy and probably finished by 1769, the year his daughter Rebecca married Francis Lightfoot Lee. The two-story house has a hip-on-hip roof, stuccoed local brown sandstone walls, stone quoins, belt courses and molded window trim. Its central-hall plan held four rooms per floor, and two two-story dependencies once formed a forecourt. Lee, born at Stratford in 1734, served in the House of Burgesses and four times as a delegate to the Continental Congress. He and his brother Richard Henry Lee were the only two brothers to sign the Declaration of Independence. Lee died at Menokin in 1797, and the house passed to his nephew Ludwell Lee. Its design resembles Mount Airy and was probably influenced by William Adam's Vitruvius Scoticus. The house has long been unoccupied and is now a ruin.","period_of_significance":"18th Century (specific date 1769)","architect_builder":"Built by Colonel John Tayloe of Mount Airy; possibly the hand of John Ariss, to whom Mount Airy is attributed","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Unoccupied for many years and in a state of complete ruin; interior paneling removed and the garden facade wall has collapsed.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.735428-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/58/6828/41682858/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/69000276.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000276/981902bb2c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000276/981902bb2c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Menokin_01.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Menokin_01.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100005837","name":"Occupacia-Rappahannock Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/occupacia-rappahannock-rural-historic-district-100005837/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682858","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menokin","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6817238"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/menokin-69000276/"}
