A date of 1657 appears on one of its roof timbers.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is significant for its well-preserved colonial brickwork and its great age. It cites an authority on Virginia's colonial churches who calls it probably the oldest church in the colony and a supremely classical example of colonial ecclesiastical architecture. The date 1657 on a roof timber supports an early origin.","narrative":"Merchant's Hope Church is a small brick church of about 60 by 25 feet near Hopewell, Virginia. Its walls are laid in Flemish bond with glazed headers above the water table and English bond below. The gable roof has splayed eaves and a modillioned cornice, and the front gable end has a rubbed brick arched doorway and a gallery window. Inside, the original Portland stone floor tiles survive. Part of the interior was destroyed during the Civil War, and the present interior dates from 1870, when the church returned to use. A restoration in 1957 uncovered evidence of the original interior layout. The church was built as the parish church of Jordan's Parish and later served Westover Parish and Martin's Brandon Parish. A date of 1657 appears on a roof timber. An authority on Virginia's colonial churches called it probably the oldest church in the colony and praised its plain, well-preserved brickwork. Richard Bland and Edmund Ruffin are recorded as regular worshippers.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in fair condition, with a restoration carried out in 1957 and later grant-aided interior woodwork restoration.
