Its main block is rare for having three floor levels beneath a gambrel roof. The house, furnishings, outbuildings, cemetery and gardens survive as a remarkably complete plantation complex, and the property has remained with the Eyre descendants.","narrative":"Eyre Hall is a plantation house near Cheriton on Virginia's Eastern Shore. It grew in stages. The oldest part is a story-and-a-half, four-room frame house from the mid-eighteenth century, probably built by Littleton Eyre after he bought the land in 1754. Around 1796 his grandson John Eyre added a large gambrel-roof block, and the earlier house became a wing and was raised to two full stories. The main block is unusual for having three floor levels under its gambrel roof. Inside, an elliptical arch divides the hall, and the rooms have Doric pilasters, panelling and an Adam mantelpiece. The stair hall carries French scenic wallpaper, \"Les Rives de Bosphore,\" made around 1816 by Dufour. The land was first patented in 1637. The house, its furnishings, outbuildings, cemetery and gardens survive as a remarkably complete plantation complex that shows the sophistication of Eastern Shore plantation life, and the property has stayed with the Eyre family's descendants.","period_of_significance":"18th Century","architect_builder":"Littleton Eyre (earliest portion, assumed); John Eyre (gambrel roof portion, circa 1796)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition, occupied and used as a private residence; the form says it is little changed since John Eyre's addition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.92028-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/58/6822/41682258/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/69000265.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000265/62453678fe-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000265/62453678fe-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eyre_hall_(dnr).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eyre_hall_(dnr).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682258","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyre_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5422987"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/northampton-county/eyre-hall-69000265/"}
