George Carter, son of Robert \"Councillor\" Carter, built it between 1800 and 1803 on land from a large tract his father bought in 1776, and he is credited with its design, drawing on William Chambers' treatise on civil architecture. A tetrastyle Corinthian portico was added in 1827. Carter also laid out the formal gardens, known for their boxwood, and planned the slave quarters and outbuildings. After decline following the Civil War, the estate passed from the Carter family in 1897 and was acquired in 1903 by William Corcoran Eustis and his wife Edith, who enlarged and restored the gardens. They later gave the house and part of the farm to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1965. It is regarded as one of the most elaborate Federal country seats in America.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"George Carter (designer and builder)","architectural_style":"Federal, with Adamesque and Greek Revival details","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition; owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which exhibits the house and sponsors equestrian events on the grounds.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.207156-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/43/6816/41681643/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/69000255.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000255/b0e47aad2a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000255/b0e47aad2a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Fletcher6","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oatlands_Plantation.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fletcher6</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oatlands_Plantation.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"74002327","name":"Oatlands Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/oatlands-historic-district-74002327/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681643","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oatlands_Historic_House_%26_Gardens","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7074493"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/loudoun-county/oatlands-69000255/"}
