The south gallery is the only surviving side gallery in a Virginia colonial church. The churchyard holds altar-tombs of the Ball family, and Mary Ball, mother of George Washington, was a parishioner.","narrative":"St. Mary's Whitechapel is a rectangular brick church of about 64 by 29 feet in Lancaster County, Virginia. The parish took its name from the Whitechapel district of London, home to some early communicants, and a church stood on the site by 1669. The surviving walls were built as transepts of a cruciform church in 1740-41 under a contract with James Jones. After the building was abandoned following the Disestablishment, it was repaired and reoccupied in 1832. The nave and chancel were removed, and their bricks filled the gaps between the transepts, which became a smaller church. Inside, the south gallery with its Tuscan columns is the only colonial woodwork remaining and the only surviving side gallery in a Virginia colonial church. The churchyard contains altar-tombs of the Ball family; Mary Ball, mother of George Washington, worshipped here. The church still holds a communion set from 1669, a stone font from 1718 and a vestry book of 1739-88.","period_of_significance":"17th, 18th and 19th centuries (boxes checked)","architect_builder":"James Jones (contractor, 1740-41)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in use for religious purposes; condition marked fair; the burying ground is still in use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.566922-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/87/6814/41681487/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/69000254.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000254/12fe6dfa9f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000254/12fe6dfa9f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Asteuartw","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_marys_whitechapel.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Asteuartw</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_marys_whitechapel.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681487","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Mary%27s,_Whitechapel","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7590053"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/lancaster-county/st-marys-whitechapel-69000254/"}
