Its interior woodwork is regarded by many authorities as the most beautiful of the colonial period in America. Although the exterior was heavily altered in 1927-28, it remains a supreme example of colonial craftsmanship.","narrative":"Carter's Grove is a brick plantation mansion begun around 1750 for Carter Burwell, grandson of Robert \"King\" Carter, on a terraced rise looking across low fields toward the James River near Williamsburg. Plantation accounts from 1751-53 name David Minitree of Williamsburg as the builder, while the elaborate woodwork is credited to Richard Bayliss, an English joiner whose passage Burwell paid. The main house shows classic Virginia Georgian features: Flemish bond walls, rubbed brick quoins, gauged brick arches, pedimented brick doorways and a modillion cornice. Two flanking dependencies stand to the east and west. Until 1927 it was considered among the most perfectly preserved great plantation houses in Virginia. A remodelling in 1927-28 raised the roof eleven feet, added dormers and connected the dependencies with hyphens. The interior woodwork survived largely intact and is still regarded as exceptional, which underpins the house's standing today.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"David Minitree of Williamsburg (builder); Richard Bayliss (joiner, woodwork)","architectural_style":"Virginia Georgian (early-Georgian colonial)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition, altered, on its original site, with preservation work in progress; present use is a museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:56.599073-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/79/6813/41681379/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/69000249.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000249/2f1ac84efc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/69000249/2f1ac84efc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Melissa Wilkins from USA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CartersGrove.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Melissa Wilkins from USA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CartersGrove.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681379","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carter%27s_Grove","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5047087"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/james-city-county/carters-grove-69000249/"}
